Ok, I know work is still ongoing on the migration :)
being a geek however, i'd be remiss not to comment on ongoing work and push deadlines :P
it is kinda confusing (nothing new there) - though it hardly matters - most of the time I'm not sure whether i'm responding to a blog or a forum posting :D
Re: New look feedback
Hi FK,
Thanks for the feedback, which is important for us to shape the course of the migration.
Will definately work on the requests. Didn't realize that Firefox has a BBcode extension.
Will also change the theme for forums to make them different from the blogs. Currently, only the breadcrumbs at the top of the page which differenciates the two sections.
The last thing we want is to have our visitors and members confused.
aduh..ponin kepalo den..
ello mr webmaster...i prefer the old formatlaah...more user friendly...yang baru ni buat aku pening kepala je..can we go back to the old format?
Hang tight, Jabb :)
It's all about the paradigm shift. Once you've realized a better approach, you can never go back to the old ways.
Give it a few more visits, a bit more navigating and a whole stacks of modifications to make this looks a bit more like the old one, you'll find your way around here better.
Believe me, we are on a better platform than we were before.
change is good but it has to
change is good but it has to make sense ;)
this new forum doesn't quite jive - when you click on "last page" of a long thread, none of the posts there are actually related to the first posting (unlike comments to a blog article)
it follows that people shouldn't respond to each other's comments in a blog, and any comments should be related to the original blog post.
I'm curious about the software platform tho.. what is it?
Help!!!!! I'm
Help!!!!! I'm lost.
Totally agree with FK on the
Totally agree with FK on the two things. The latest comment link does not jive if the comment number is more than what is displayed on the topic. Let's say a topic has 100 comments and you've set your preference to display only 30 comments per page, then the latest link will not bring you to where it should, i.e the fourth page of the topic. We will investigate the fix to that.
On the second item, yes, users should only comment on what's related to the topic. Start a new blog entry or forum topic if you want to say something different.
The platform which we are using is drupal, developed by a bunch of Beligan students. Pretty smart guys, I'd say, as many sites are migrating over to drupal and Google supported the developers with USD50k in grant money.
This is actually a blogging platform, and the forum is an add on, Thus there's less forum features then phpBB. Honestly, we moved away from forum-centric platform to blogging-centric one because of the noise (chit-chatiness) factor inherent in forums. Blogs on the other hand, give more focus on the original posts, rather than the subsequent comments.
Bak, you have to unlearnt all that you have learnt. ;)
is Feruz's
is Feruz's topic...
...closed? I can't see a comment entry form
re: chit-chattiness - isn't that what people go to a forum for? :D
though we do tend to ramble on sometimes the current posts are more related to each other while always loosely tied to the original posting.
so; as a blogging platform this is very very neat. as a discussion forum it's somewhat clunky and not conducive to dicussions, I guess because we're mostly used to threaded discussions. Did you want to dissuade us from chit-chats? :)
As far as shifting paradigms, it's a bit like GMail - there are no more folders, but labels - it took awhile to get used to but in that case it works fine because you suddenly discover that you actually want to attach more than one label to some mails, and you start missing that feature in regular mail clients.
Anyhow.. you can use any knife to cut bread, but a bread knife is best. I'd go for a radical bread knife, but it has to be a bread knife.
p.s. can we have the subject field back, but default it to RE: original topic ?
Ouch! Sharp knife :). Having
Ouch! Sharp knife :).
Having said all of the above, the forum features here will get better with further modifications in store. I've seen some impressive drupal forums out there. Do give us some times to learn the ropes to implement them.
It will also have community comment moderation similar in concept to digg and slashdot, which could help to bring out the best in forums.
As for Feruz's topic, with his consent, we will help to migrate it to Feruz's blog where it would be more appropriate and easier for readers to browse through it's content, where major entries in the single thread would be transformed into separate blog entries.
For those who still prefer phpBB forum, it is still running at http://mckk8286.com/phpbb
We have not integrated user accounts/authentication system, so profiles will be maintained separately.
It was attacked by hackers recently and several viruses were left in the codes. We've patched it already and it won't affect FireFox anyway.
Latest comment link is now
Latest comment link is now fixed. Thanks for keeping us on our toes, FK. ;)
drupal, it's hip ;)
drupal, it's hip ;)
another small item to fix whenever things stabilize:
* links within postings do not spawn a new window/tab
needs op
timization, seems like its slow for me - are you guys still tweaking?
Re: Optimization
We're waiting for version 4.7 to come out of beta in several weeks.
Reportedly, there'll be lots of optimization enhancements. We'll see then. There's still plan B, as phpBB 3.0 is also in the works. :)
Oh dear. I'm glad this is not a corporate site I'm maintaining. Otherwise, my ass will be on the line. He! He!
geek!
haha :D
I think though, the natives may be getting restless and missing the forum
more whingeing from the lazy sod
i just noticed that the sig is embedded into each posting .. sort of manually. therefore all my old postings with the full width sig image is stretching the middle portion out there ---->
I've changed the sig in my profile - but I'm too lazy to change all the old postings :P
Re: Consistent Signature
We've found the patch which separates the signature from the content. Will be implementing that as soon as there's a free block of time in front of the PC.
For your existing signatures, will use SQL to fix the whole lot.
But where are the natives? :)
if tech-savvy people
... are having niggling problems with the new software, you can bet the natives will find it too cumbersome to navigate
p.s. thanks in advance for fixing the sig.
FK & Webmaster, i'm surely
FK & Webmaster,
i'm surely not a tech savvy person.. [tu pasal my blog very plain without color or attraction, hahaha] and i find it reallt difficult here, esp when i just wanna go to the last comment to any topic i wanted to see.. tapiiii, tak boleh. kena click the topic and scroll down to the bottom, then only can reply in the box.. geeez, lecehnya :( sorry coz the truth most of the times hurt but it's better to know the truth on why i tak lalu lalang kat sini lagi dah :(

yup, it's really confusing.
yup, it's really confusing. mine; messages (or replies) were sorted as newest on top. didn't remember whether it was the default setting or not. now that i changed my setting, it's all good.
one more thing though, i found it troublesome to navigate back to the top of the page. could we have the "Back to Top" button on every messages/replies ?

Re: Back to Top
That's a good suggestion Cikun. Will look into adding 'Back to Top' link. Hopefully could get that done next week when I have a bit more time.
I understand we are missing several buttons/links previously available in phpBB, but somehow didn't seem that important for those who developed this Drupal platform. We're not the only ones who are complaining, so there are bit and pieces being worked on.
New new format
Thank you for your feedback and for bringing back the private group thread. Do we get to call them 'threads' anymore? I think it's more like a private blog to me, I dunno.
p/s: I'm trying my best to use proper case in my posts.
Re: Signature patched
OK. The signature block is now separate from the content, and changing your signature once in your profile would change it for all your posts like it used to be in the good ol' phpBB. :)
Unfortunately, only html tags are recognized in the profile's signature field. BBCode tags in sigs are currently not properly rendered. But I think that's a minor issue.
Sigs
doumo arigato gozaimasu!
let's see if this nested reply pushes the sig out... maybe i need less width
p.s thanks for fixing my sig HTML code, too!
New skin
hey.. what happened to the arrows.. kinda liked them :D
not complaining.. I'll check the skins selection in my profile
at least the words aren't huge anymore heheh

Re: Private Forum
Cikun,
Could you check if you and your batch mates could see your batch's private forum as well as other MCOB forums?
I've made some changes to the access control.
Thanks.
Huh? I went MIA kejap and
Huh? I went MIA kejap and now I'm lost!! Where am I again meh? Aiyohh... so geeky laahhh heheheheh pppfffttttttt!!! :P
Re: Private Forum
I can actually see most of the private parts.. erk! Private forums, I mean. Forums for Arietans, '00, '97, '96 and SSP are viewable. I think I can create posts there as well, but I don't want to invade the forums.
edited: nope, I can view only la (other private forums). Sorry, wrong info.
the people have spoken..
all those in favour of going back to the good ole format say "AYE!!!"
:D
Old Forum Format
Jabb,
The old format is still intact and you can access it at http://mckk8286.com/phpbb
