In 1960, Yazid, together with his friends Rosli and a few other settlers who later became his close friends and confidante, Hamzah, Mustafa and Mat Ya arrived in Bilut, which they regarded as the land of exploration and opportunity.
Yazid later brought with him his wife, Aishah and their children Yusof, Asmah and Yamin. Clearing a forest was not easy and their confidence was first put to the test with the death of Rosli who was hit by the falling big branch. Yazid had to continue assuring Aishah to hang on and accept the challenges as tests. From then onwards, they had to go through various events and hardship – wild animals that share their habitat, natural disaster of storm and flood, people’s hatred, jealousy, betrayal. Yazid’s most unbearable challenge was when his third child, Yamin, at his age of seven, died after being attacked by a tiger. Yazid found himself blaming the management for their lackadaisical attitude in ensuring safety in the area. Not only that, he also blamed his wife Aishah for not properly taking care of their child. Overwhelmed with emotion and sadness, Aishah decided to get away from the settlement with their children Yusof and Asmah. As fate wrote itself, Aishah got pregnant but life offers its tests in its own way.
Yusof excelled in his study and came out as the first settler’s son to have been accepted to study abroad. It was in Brussels that Yusof knew life better, a life outside the cocoon with friends of other nationalities such as his Filipino best friend, Gabriel.
It was in Brussels that he found his first and true love in Khatijah. However, fate was not so kind and as with human division of caste and position, Khatijah’s parents ruled out the possibility of their bonding, leaving Yusof finding comfort while confiding in Lisa. Lisa became his closest mate until she decided to convert to Islam and change her name to Mazuin.
Thinking it was more than just friendship and that it was love, Yusof made a decision to marry Mazuin, just to get disapproval from his father, Yazid. Meanwhile, Yusof found out that his sister Asmah, was almost losing her sanity and not her normal self ever since losing her husband just shortly after they were married.
In 2006, Gabriel, now a filmmaker, is in Malaysia to research and experience the life of settlers. His docu-drama project calls for the need to do a thorough study about the key to the success of FELDA and its contribution to not only the growth of the economy but also to the development of the people of the nation. Gabriel meets up with Yusof, his good friend in university in Brussels, Belgium back in 1976 who shares with him the meaning of life's hardship and sacrifices and shows him the fruit of hard work of the early settlers, including his father Yazid; and how they chose to take up the test of an opportunity worth exploring.
