From the papers today, 45 death in Malaysia from the tsunami event, out of the 10,000 count as of this moment. Yang kesian most of the death are children while they are having a picnic by the beach, one guy lost 4 kids......

Saw in the BBC world this morning, that the US geological raised the quake's ricther scale to 9.0 from 8.9 yesterday. In Al Jazera (sorry spelling) showed the wave was heavy in Oman....

One of the main problem is because there is no Tsunami Warning System in the Hindi Ocean like the Pacific.

Bam was only 6.5 on Richter scale. But the damage was extensive because the epicentre was very close to Bam itself.

This 9.0 happened in the middle of the ocean. Meaning some circular radius from the epicentre, the quake will become less, when it hits the Acheh province, probably it was down to 6.0 - but enough to cause 600 casualties.

Re:Earthquake in Sumatera

Asia piles up dead, toll in quake, tidal wave tops 22,000

GALLE, Sri Lanka (AP) - The carnage from an earthquake-driven tidal wave that devastated coastlines from Asia to Africa doubled to more than 22,000 dead Monday, and rescuers struggled to deliver aid to the hardest-hit areas, raising fears about the spread of disease as bodies rotted on tropical beaches.

Offers of aid poured in from around the globe, but millions of people remained homeless and thousands were still missing a day after the disaster.

The number of dead was expected to keep rising as workers reached remoter regions and the sea washed up more corpses.

U.N. Undersecretary-Jan Egeland, who is in charge of emergency relief, said the disaster could be the costliest in history, "probably many billions of dollars.''

More than 12,000 people died in Sri Lanka, nearly 5,000 in Indonesia, and 4,000 in India.

The International Red Cross, which reported 23,700 deaths, said it was concerned that waterborne diseases like malaria and cholera could add to the toll.

Dazed tourists evacuated the popular island resorts of southern Thailand, where the Thai-American grandson of revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej was listed as one of more than 900 people dead. Scores more died in Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, the Maldives - and thousands of kilometers (miles) away in Africa.

Officials in Thailand and Indonesia officials conceded that immediate public warnings of monster waves could have saved lives.

The only known warning issued by Thai authorities reached resort operators when it was too late.

But governments insisted they couldn't have known the true danger because there is no international system in place to track tidal waves in the Indian Ocean, and they could not afford the sophisticated equipment to build one.

The 9.0-magnitude quake struck off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra early Sunday, unleashing waves that roared across the Bay of Bengal at 800 kilometers per hour (500 kph), ripping into Thailand in an hour and striking Sri Lanka and India within 2 1/2 hours.

They raced 4,500 kilometers (2,800 miles) to Africa, killing hundreds of people in Somalia and three in the Seychelles.

In a scene repeated across the region, bodies were still coming in Monday evening to the hospital in Sri Lanka's southern town of Galle - one of the worst-affected areas of the hardest-hit nation.

A tractor carried about 15 corpses of mostly women and children, some wrapped in white plastic sheets.

A large crowd had gathered at the hospital trying to learn if their missing family members were there.

"The toll is increasing,'' said Brig. Daya Ratnayake, a military spokesman. "We are finding more bodies.''

The six-meter-high (20-foot-high) waves smashed into seaside towns and resorts, sweeping away boats, homes, hotels, fishermen and holidaymakers.

At the Thai island resort of Phuket, the torrents pulled a 6-month-old Australian baby from her father's arms.

A large proportion of the victims were youngsters, and funerals were held for children and teenagers who could not cope with the fury of the sea. Ted Chaiban, chief for the United Nations Children's Fund in Sri Lanka, estimated that nearly half the victims there were children.

In Cuddalore, India, the bodies of more than 150 children killed were buried in a mass grave - their weeping, red-eyed parents looking on as a bulldozer filled the hole with sodden earth.

In Banda Aceh, capital of Indonesia's strife-torn Aceh province, the streets were filled with overturned cars and the rotting corpses of adults and children.

Shopping malls and office buildings lay in rubble, and thousands of homeless families huddled together in mosques and schools.

The city of 400,000 people is the nearest population center to the epicenter of the quake and was virtually unique in being destroyed by the temblor - the world's most powerful in 40 years - rather than the floodwaters.

At least 3,000 people died.

"Where are my children?'' said 41-year-old Absah, crying uncontrollably as she searched for her 11 children, whom she said were still missing.

"Where are they? Why did this happen to me? I've lost everything.''

The Indonesian and Sri Lankan governments declared national disasters, as did the Maldives, a low-lying string of coral atolls where a meter (three feet) of water pushed into homes in Male, the capital, on Sunday and residents spent a night fearing the waves would return.

Indonesia and Sri Lanka had at least a million people each driven from their homes. Helicopters in India rushed medicine to stricken areas, while warships in Thailand steamed to island resorts to rescue survivors.

About 200 people were evacuated from devastated Phi Phi island, one of Thailand's most popular destinations for Westerners, who had been escaping frigid winters on the beaches before their Christmas holidays were turned into what some likened to a war zone.

Jimmy Gorman, 30, of Manchester, England, said he saw 15 bodies on the island, including up to five children and a pregnant woman.

"Disaster. Flattened everything,'' Gorman said.

"There's nothing left of it.''

Among the dead in southern Thailand was the grandson of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, officials said. Poom Jensen, 21, was reportedly jet skiing when the tidal wave struck.

Witnesses in Thailand described seeing waters disappearing away from the beaches in the minutes before the waves struck.

Scientists say the effect is caused by tidal waves sucking shallow coastal waters out to sea before returning them as a massive wall of water.

"The water went back, back, back, so far away, and everyone wondered what it was. Then we saw the wave come, and we ran,'' said Katri Seppanen, who was on Phuket Island's Patong beach with her family when the wave washed over their heads and separated them.

They found each other two hours later.

Italy confirmed that 13 of its citizens had died in Thailand. Britain confirmed 11 deaths, Norway 10, Sweden nine, the United States eight, and France and Australia six.

Austria confirmed four deaths and Denmark three. Belgium and South Africa confirmed two, and Finland one.

Malaysia, South Korea, Switzerland, Poland, Japan, Russia, Turkey, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Czech Republic had unconfirmed reports of dead or missing.

U.S. officials were seeking to contact hundreds of Americans who remain unaccounted for in the region, and European countries set up hotlines for family members and sent diplomats to aid stranded countrymen.

The United States dispatched disaster teams and prepared a US$15 million (euro11 million) aid package to the Asian countries, and the 25-nation European Union promised to quickly deliver euro3 million (US$4 million). Japan, China and Russia were sending teams of experts. - AP

Asia in shock

COLOMBO: The death toll in a tsunami that slammed into coasts from India to Indonesia topped 23,000 yesterday as rescuers scoured the sea for missing tourists and fears of disease grew as soldiers raced to recover rotting bodies.

Sri Lankan military spokesman Daya Ratnayaka said 11,000 people had been killed in Sri Lanka alone, while a government minister said 200 foreign tourists were feared dead.

Other areas affected by Sunday’s tsunami were southern India, where officials reported more than 6,823 dead, northern Indonesia with about 4,723 drowned and Thailand’s southern tourist islands where up to 866 lost their lives.

Malaysia reported 53 fatalities, the majority of them in Penang.

The world’s biggest earthquake in 40 years triggered the wall of water up to 10m high that fanned out across the Bay of Bengal.

In Banda Aceh, capital of Indonesia’s Aceh province near the epicentre of the magnitude 9.0 quake, troops were still unloading piles of bodies from military trucks late yesterday.

At least two British tourists and 41 others were killed while another 63 were missing in the Maldives, officials said.

An international aid agency said at least 30 people were killed in Myanmar and the toll was expected to rise substantially.

More than 100 Somali fishermen were killed by deadly tsunami, officials in Somalia confirmed yesterday. – Agencies

Also I have a lot to complain during that's night's TV3's 8pm news. They open the coverage with tremors in KL, Rawang, KB, etc? Why? Nobody died in KL or Rawang. Only after 10 mins, they covered Penang and Kedah where people actually perished in the disaster. And, as expected, baru buat coverage on Acheh, Phuket, Sri Lanka, etc.

Re:Earthquake in Sumatera

YALA NATIONAL PARK, Sri Lanka (AP) - Wildlife officials in Sri Lanka expressed surprise Wednesday that they found no evidence of large-scale animal deaths from the tsunamis - indicating that animals may have sensed the wave coming and fled to higher ground.

An Associated Press photographer who flew over Sri Lanka's Yala National Park in an air force helicopter saw abundant wildlife, including elephants, buffalo, deer, and not a single animal corpse.

Floodwaters from Sunday's tsunami swept into the park, uprooting trees and toppling cars onto their roofs - one red car even ended up on top of a huge tree - but the animals apparently were not harmed and may have sought out high ground, said Gehan de Silva Wijeyeratne, whose Jetwing Eco Holidays ran a hotel in the park.

``This is very interesting. I am finding bodies of humans, but I have yet to see a dead animal,'' said Wijeyeratne, whose hotel in the park was destroyed.

``Maybe what we think is true, that animals have a sixth sense,'' Wijeyeratne said.

Yala, Sri Lanka's largest wildlife reserve, is home to 200 Asian Elephants, crocodile, wild boar, water buffalo and gray langur monkeys. The park also has Asia's highest concentration of leopards. The Yala reserve covers 391 square miles, but only 56 square miles are open to tourists.

The human death toll in Sri Lanka surpassed 21,000. Forty foreigners were among 200 people in Yala who were killed.

Re:Earthquake in Sumatera

Quote an interesting article about eartquake prediction and their scientific explanation :

Quote:
Perhaps most significantly, on February 4, 1975 the Chinese successfully evacuated the city of Haicheng several hours before a 7.3 magnitude earthquake-- based primarily on observations of unusual animal behavior. 90% of the city's structures were destroyed in the quake, but the entire city had been evacuated before it struck. Nearly 90,000 lives were saved. Since then China has been hit by a number of major quakes that they were not as prepared for, and they have also had some false alarms, so their system is certainly not fool-proof. But never-the-less, they have made a remarkable achievement by demonstrating that earthquakes do not always strike without warning.

Helmut Tributsch's beautifully written classic work on the subject of earthquakes and unusual animal behavior-- When the Snakes Awake-- details numerous consistent accounts of the phenomenon from all over the world. Although these behavior patterns are very well-documented, most geologists that I have spoken with at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) don't take it very seriously. The official word from the USGS is that there aren't any earthquake prediction techniques-- unusual animal behavior observations included-- which perform any better than chance.

In fact, the notion that odd animal behavior can help people predict earthquakes is perceived by most traditional geologists in the West as folklore, or an old wives tale, and is often cast into the same boat as sightings of poltergeists, Elvis, and the Loch Ness Monster. The ancient Greeks, on the other hand, considered an understanding of the relationship between unusual animal behavior and earthquakes to be an esoteric form of Secret Knowledge. That such strong support for the application of this knowledge exists in the East-- in long-lived civilizations like China and Japan-- is testimony to the reality of the phenomenon, as they have witnessed many more earthquakes in their long histories than has a comparatively young country like the U.S.

But not all Western geologists are close-minded with regard to the phenomenon. James Berkland-- a retired USGS geologist from Santa Clara County, California-- claims to be able to predict earthquakes with greater than 75% accuracy rate simply by counting the number of lost pet ads in the daily newspaper, and correlating this relationship to lunar-tide cycles. This maverick geologist, has been meticulously saving and counting lost pet ads for many years. Berkland says that the number of missing dogs and cats goes up significantly for as long as two weeks prior to an earthquake.

Gravitational variations due to the lunar cycles, he says, create "seismic windows" of greater earthquake probability. When the number of missing pets also suddenly rises, then-- bingo-- a quake is likely to happen. Berkland said he thinks the USGS won't accept unusual animal data because it doesn't jive with their current scientific paradigm and hypotheses, to which, he says, their precious egos are overly attached. (Researchers who attempt earthquake prediction are often lumped into the same category as fortune tellers and scam artists by traditional geologists.) It is not surprising then to hear that Berkland was suspended from his position as Santa Clara county geologist for claiming to predict earthquakes-- such as the 1989 Loma Prieta quake in Northern California, which was preceded by numerous reports of odd animal behavior.

Unusual behavior is difficult to define, and determining if there is a characteristic behavior is not a simple, clear-cut process, although there are some distinct patterns which have emerged. For example, an intense fear that appears to make some animals cry and bark for hours, and others flee in panic has been reported often. Equally characteristic is the apparent opposite effect of wild animals appearing confused, disoriented, and losing their usual fear of people. Some other common observations are that animals appear agitated, excited, nervous, overly aggressive, or seem to be trying to burrow or hide.

Although the majority of accounts pertain to dogs and cats, there are also many stories about other types of animals in the wild, on farms, and in zoos; including horses, cows, deer, goats, possums, rats, chickens, and other birds. The behavior has been reported in many other animal species as well, including fish, reptiles, and even insects. Deep sea fish, for example, have been caught close to the surface of the ocean on numerous occasions around Japan prior to earthquakes (Tributsch, 1982).

Some fish-- catfish in particular-- are reputed to become agitated before earthquakes, and at times have been reported to actually leap out of the water onto dry land. Snakes have been known to leave their underground places of hibernation in the middle of the winter prior to quakes, only to be found frozen on the surface of the snow. Mice are commonly reported to appear dazed before quakes, and allow themselves to easily be captured by hand. Homing pigeons are said to take much longer to navigate to their destination prior to earthquakes. Hens have been reported laying fewer eggs, or no eggs at all, and pigs have been observed aggressively trying to bite one another before earthquakes (Tributsch, 1982).

Bees have been seen evacuating their hive in a panic, minutes before an earthquake, and then not returning until fifteen minutes after the quake ended. Even creatures such as millipedes, leeches, squid, and ants have been reported to exhibit abnormal behavior prior to earthquakes (Miller, 1996).

These strange behaviors generally occur anywhere from moments to weeks in advance of a quake. Most of the people I have spoken with who have witnessed this phenomenon, observed the strange behavior within twenty-four hours of a quake, although some observations occurred more than a week before the quake struck. Berkland has suggested that there are possibly two primary precursory earthquake signals-- one several weeks before, and the other one just moments before the quake. A lot of reports appear to confirm this.

A number of theories have been proposed to explain this phenomenon, and what the precursory signals that the animals are picking up on might be. Because many animals possess auditory capacities beyond the human range, it has been suggested that some animals may be reacting to ultrasound emitted as microseisms from fracturing rock (Armstrong, 1969).

Another candidate is fluctuations in the earth's magnetic field. Because some animals have a sensitivity to variations in the earth's magnetic field (usually as a means of orientation), and since variations in the magnetic field occur near the epicenters of earthquakes (Chapman and Bartels, 1940), it has been suggested that this is what the animals are picking up on.

Marsha Adams, an independent earthquake researcher in San Francisco, claims to have developed sensors that measure low-frequency electromagnetic signals which allow her to predict earthquakes with over 90% accuracy. Adams suspects that low-frequency electromagnetic signals-- created by the fracturing of crystalline rock deep in the earth along fault lines-- are "biologically active", and that her instruments are picking up the same signals that sensitive animals do. As a result of this technology (whose details are a corporate secret), she says that her system makes unusual animal behavior observations obsolete.

Fish have a high degree of sensitivity to variations in electric fields, and because telluric current variations have also been noted before some earthquakes, Ulomov and Malashev have suggested that this is what the fish may be reacting to. Some organisms respond to changes in the polarity and concentration of atmospheric ions, and they suspect that this sensitivity enables some animals to detect the air-ionizing effects of radon released from the ground in advance of certain earthquakes.

Tributsch has suggested that a piezoelectric effect may be at work here. When certain crystals, such as quartz, are arranged in such a way that pressure is applied along certain of the crystal's axes, the distribution of positive and negative ions can shift slightly. In this way pressure changes produce electrical charging of the crystal's surfaces. On the average, the earth's crust consists of 15% quartz, and in certain areas it can be as high as 55%.

According to Tributsch, the piezoelectric effect of the quartz is capable of generating enough electrical energy to account for the creation of airborne ions before and during an earthquake. This electrostatic charging of aerosol particles may be what the animals are reacting to. Animals, also observed acting unusual in similar ways prior to thunderstorms, may have evolved a sensitivity to electrical changes in their environment (Tributsch, 1982).

The effects of radon gas on the level of air ionization explained above, can also be expected to change the field gradient, and dozens of animals have been shown to be sensitive to changes in the electric field gradient of the atmosphere (Chalmers, 1967). Other possibilities are that the animals are actually experiencing a form of pre-cognition, or they could be perceiving and responding to stimuli that currently science has no way to measure. (Support for the notion of pre-cognition is increased when one compares the reports of unusual animal behavior described in this article, with the even more puzzling reports of strange animal behavior reported in England during World War II. Dr. Sheldrake told me that animals were said to act unusual prior to aerial bomb raids, long before they could have possibly heard or felt the vibrations from the approaching aircrafts.)

Some people say that they feel an uncomfortable pressure in their head, or a persistent headache that lasts for weeks, which suddenly vanishes moments before an earthquake. Because magnetite has been found in some animal brains, Berkland thinks that it is possible that animals may be reacting to their own headaches caused by changes in the earth's electromagnetic field. He said that a dog was observed chewing on willow bark-- from which aspirin in derived-- prior to an earthquake, and he believes that this was an attempt by the dog to self-medicate himself for the headache. He also told me that some people with Multiple Sclerosis-- a disease caused by improper insulation around the electrically-conductive fibers of the nervous system-- experience an increase in symptoms weeks before an earthquake.

Other mysterious phenomena are often connected with earthquakes. The regular eruptions of geysers have been interrupted. Well levels have been reported to change, or the water in them has been known to become cloudy. Magnets have been said to temporarily lose their power. Many people report that there is suddenly an unexplainable stillness in the air, and that all around them becomes completely silent. Strange lights are often seen glowing from the earth, and unusual fogs have been reported. These phenomena are all consistent with the notion that the odd animal behavior may result from changes in the earth's electromagnetic field, or the release of electrically-charged particles due to intense pressure on crystalline rock. (More puzzling is that a number of people claim to have sighted UFO's hovering around earthquake sites.)

Another possibly related point of interest is that electrically-charged ionic particles have been shown to change neurotransmitter ratios in animal brains, and since charged ions may be released prior to some earthquakes, it has been suggested that this may explain the two seemingly-contradictory behavior patterns I discussed above, where in normally-calm pets seem to become frightened, and wild animals often appear to lose their sense of fear (Tributsch, 1982). These neurotransmitter changes could possibly help to explain another related phenomenon. I've noticed that earthquakes themselves (like solar eclipses) sometimes trigger an intense consciousness-altering experience. People often feel energized, emotionally open, and acutely sensitive following earthquakes. Powerful bonding experiences often occur between people in the aftermath of a quake, although this is likely to be true for any natural disaster that people share.

I guess it is on all the Newspapers front cover of an Acehnese/Indonesian lady that survived for 6 days in open sea holding on to an uprooted palm tree.

This might be one of the miracle suvivors of the tragedy, as she was found by a deep sea fishing vessel off course as their normal route wasn't in great condition.

Hmmm interesting information.

I wonder now on the issue about the lakes that smells like sulfur and thousand of fishes yang timbul after the earthquake and tsunami last week. And not to forget the sink holes in many areas. Besar pulak tu. What causes that? I'm very curious about that. When I took up Geology(sp) class last time, if I'm not mistaken I read it somewhere that this could be signs of underground volcano activity or larva movement or something. In Malaysia? Can that happen ah??? Anyone can clarrify this?? There was a movie about this on TV but can't remember the title.

I guess Malaysia was quite lucky in the sense that we have the Straits of Mallacca to be our buffer. As one scientist said that as the straits is not as deep as the ocean/ open sea..... we were saved from the full force of the tsunami, which reached up to 300-500 kmh while the one that hit us was around 100kmh. For example Malawati, the woman that was saved a few days ago, she stayed about 2 kilometres away from the sea and she was swept away....... I can't imagine and wouldn't want to know if we were hit by that same wave...... what would happen to the northern states like Perlis and Penang?

Everytime when there is a movement to the earth crust shown by the sign of earthquake or lava eruption....a crack will be produced...so when there is a crack...the gas will try to come out.....radon, sulphur base gas and etc....thats why in Japan the taste of the well water are used to predict the earthquake..because it taste different when the water is contaminated with radon gas...and for the fishes,it might also be caused by the poisonous gas released from below the crust....tanda2 tu ader ALLAH tunjukkan..cuma manusia sajer yg perlu mencarinya utk dibuat explanation

The eruption of the super volcano is overdue now....

In this undated photo released by the Anthropological Survey of India, Sentinelese tribe men row their canoe in Indias Andaman and Nicobar archipelago. Government officials and anthropologists believe that ancient knowledge of the movement of wind, sea and birds may have saved the five indigenous tribes on the Indian archipelago of Andaman and Nicobar islands from the tsunami that hit the Asian coastline Dec. 26, 2004.According to varying estimates, there are only about 400 to 1,000 members alive today from the Great Andamanese, Onges, Jarawas, Sentinelese and Shompens. Some anthropological DNA studies indicate the generations may have spanned back 70,000 years.

Hmm, earth axis rotation shift? That goes back to the theory in the Da Vicci Code book - on the prediction of some sort of axis rotation.

But first time hearing about the relation between this earth quake and the axis though.

Re:Earthquake in Sumatera

Having been to the affected area i.e. I was in Team Penang Island(don't know about teams, they went to other places), the tsunami was BAD. The assessment as follows :

Gurney Drive was not that badly affected..the were saved by the land reclaimation works for the new floating Masjid Negeri. Silting was a big problem but MPPP did a good job in clearing the mess. Based on interviews, the waves went as high 5m (don't know if the fishermen were exaggerating) but the momentum of the waves were reduced by the works (acted as some barrier) to around 2-3m when reached shore.

Batu Ferenggi was badly affected coz it was facing open sea. Luckily the road was higher up so it was passable. Silt from ocean bed again was everywhere. Close to 10 tonnes of silt were collected (apart from other sampah sarap n wreckages) for a 200m stretch. Go calculate the length ofg beachfront.

Balik Pulau - Pulau Betong (nama aje pulau), worst hit, mud a.k.a silt was like 1m deep. Still not fully cleaned up as it was close to mangrove swamp. Heavy vehicles susah nak ply in to give assistance. Stench was unbearable (and unexplainable) due to decomposing livestock/animals, wet wood n others. No sign of dead people though (ada ke orang mati kat sini? Didn't read the paper ) Don't know if I was stepping on them due to the thick mud/silt. Masa jalan tu tawakal ajelah.

All in all, it was an eye opener for me, in terms of sufferings felt by the people n also how mother nature works (the movement of the waves, the destruction etc)

Oh ya, did you know the fishermen did have an early warning a couple of days prior to the earthquake? They caught 3-4 times more fish than their normal daily catch. Apparently you can just dip your hand in the sea and you could definitely catch something. Guess greed got the better of them. There were also no birds (albatrosses and sea gulls) flying when they went to sea.

Dunia nak kiamat kut :?:

thanx for the first hand info. memang kita ni patut bersyukur because our homes were not affected at all and we're still living in our cozy house, going to work in our nice cars, putting on our normal attire.. pendek kata everything in tact.

are going to any site[s] again? if yes, any things/clothes we can donate to help them out? if yes also, may be we can gather really/most needed things and your team or other teams can send to them.

anyways, glad that you came back in one piece :)

mesjid Baitur Rahman

Sedikit catatan mengenai mesjid Baitur Rahman yang masih utuh walau diterjang ombak tsunami.

Quote:

meningkatkan keimanan orang mukmin.
orang kafir semakin ragu. Sebaliknya orang mukmin meningkat keimanan mereka.

Ternyata Allah SWT
memelihara mesjidnya dari angkara durjana tentera Abrahah. Sebaliknya Abrahah dan tenteranyalah
yang dimusnahkan Allah.

Sebagaimana burung-burung ababil adalah jundullah (tentera Al
